Commando Sappers
Originally employed as 59 Field Squadron Royal Engineers by 3 Commando Brigade in Singapore in 1967, 59 Independent Commando Squadron officially formed up in April 1971 at Plymouth, followed by 131 Independent Commando Squadron Royal Engineers (V) forming in 1977. This painting depicts the varied roles of Commando Sappers since 1971.
In 2008, 24 Commando Regiment Royal Engineers was formed, and currently consists of 54 Commando Headquarters & Support Squadron; 59 Commando Squadron; and 131 Commando Squadron which formally became a full part of 24 Commando in 2015, making the regiment a hybrid Regular/Reserve unit.
24 Commando Regiment Royal Engineers takes over the roles previously fulfilled by 59 Independent Commando Squadron RE, the ranks of which formed the core of 24 Commando. The Regiment forms a key part of 3 Commando Brigade and its main role is to provide combat engineering support to the brigade. This includes the construction or destruction of fortifications, bridges and roads, the laying and clearing of mines and neutralizing IEDs. The Sappers of 24 Commando go through full commando training, including the All Arms Commando Course, and can be drawn on to perform the traditional infantry role.
