The Colours of the 1st and 3rd Battalions, Royal Regiment of Fusiliers   The Colours of the 1st and 3rd Battalions, Royal Regiment of Fusiliers

On Minden Day, 1st August 1992, the 3rd Battalion The Royal Regiment of Fusiliers was withdrawn from the Order of Battle of the British Army. On that day, the 1st and 3rd Battalions were merged to form a new 1st Battalion, known as the ‘First Fusiliers.’

On St George’s Day 1993, HRH The Duke of Kent presented new Colours to the 1st Battalion at Battlesbury Barracks, Warminster. On the same occasion, the Colours of the 3rd Battalion were trooped, before being marched off parade for the last time, as the band played ‘Auld Lang Syne.’

The Colours of the various battalions are identical, apart from the Roman numeral signifying the battalion. On St George’s Day, all ranks of the Regiment wear red and white roses behind the cap badge, and wreaths of red and white roses adorn the Colours. The Drum Major’s staff and the drums are similarly garlanded.

One of the proudest traditions of The Royal Northumberland Fusiliers was to parade the Wilhelmstahl Colour on St George’s Day. Carried on parade by the youngest drummer, it is also known as the ‘Drummer’s Colour’. 1st Battalion The Royal Regiment of Fusiliers continues the tradition.

The Regimental Sergeant Major of the 1st Battalion was WO1 RC (Bob) Broadbent MBE.

The painting was commissioned by the Warrant Officers and Sergeants Mess of 1st Bn The Royal Regiment of Fusiliers.
