Presentation of Colours to 3rd Battalion 51st Highland Volunteers
26 July 1986: In 1794 the 91st Regiment of Foot (Argyllshire Highlanders) was first embodied at Stirling Castle, which later became the Headquarters of The Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.
The 3rd Battalion of the 51st Highland Volunteers was the direct successor to the 7th and 8th Battalions of The Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, which were disbanded (along with all other Highland Territorial battalions) in 1967. The same year saw the formation of The 51st Highland Volunteers.
As HM The Queen presents the Colours, she is accompanied by the Colonel of The Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, Major General C P R Palmer CBE, and the Honorary Colonel of 3rd Battalion 51st Highland Volunteers, Lt Col G P Wood MC. At left, with his sword drawn, is the Commanding Officer of the Battalion, Lt Col E J Ostman TD.
The Headquarters of The Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders arranged for me to have a portrait sitting with the Queen at Buckingham Palace.
