Sergeant Robert Bye VC
The Battle of Pilckem Ridge began early on 31st July 1917. The Guards Division crossed the Yser Canal and attacked the German lines. When Sgt Bye’s platoon was halted by machine-gun fire from a concrete blockhouse, he carefully worked his way towards it, then threw some Mills bombs into the opening. As the platoon moved forward, further enemy machine-guns in another blockhouse halted their progress. Once again, Sgt Bye took matters into his own hands and made his way towards it, silencing the gunners with grenades, thus enabling the Guardsmen to take their second objective. Sgt Bye killed, wounded and captured over 70 men. He was awarded the Victoria Cross by King George V for his utmost courage and devotion to duty.
