Standard party, Royal Scots Dragoon Guards   Standard party, Royal Scots Dragoon Guards

Standard party of the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards (Carabiniers and Greys), in front of the Warrant Officers & Sergeants Mess at Athlone Barracks, Sennelager, Paderborn in West Germany, summer 1985.

RQMS Brian Cullen carries the Standard, flanked by SQMS(T) McLean and SQMS Evans.

The Regiment strives to maintain its cavalry traditions and small detachments in scarlet full dress uniforms and mounted on grey horses appear on ceremonial occasions. The kettledrummer wears a distinctive white bearskin with a red hackle, and is mounted on a black drum horse, customs derived from the Royal Scots Greys.

The artist’s ancestor was a soldier in the 6th Dragoon Guards (The Carabiniers) from 1877 to 1889, becoming a sergeant. Most of his service was in India, and he was with the regiment in the 2nd Afghan War. The regiment amalgamated with the 3rd Dragoon Guards in 1922; a further amalgamation in 1971 with the Royal Scots Greys created The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards.
