Operation TORA ZHEMAY
On Sunday 27th February 2011, 1st Battalion The Royal Irish Regiment battle group, responsible for security in Nad 'Ali district, Helmand Province, mounted an insertion into Zaborabad, using 15 helicopters. Codenamed Operation TORA ZHEMAY VI (Black Winter), the helicopter assault inserted 300 soldiers in one wave. Also taking part were soldiers of the Afghan National Army, 5th Battalion The Royal Regiment of Scotland, 2nd Royal Tank Regiment and the US Marine Corps.
Royal Air Force CH-47 Chinooks and EH-101 Merlins, Army AH-64 Apache and Royal Navy Lynx Mk9a, as well as United States Marine Corps (USMC) CH-53 Super Stallions, AH-1W Super Cobra and UH-1Y Huey took part in the operation. The coalition troops were inserted into three helicopter landing zones simultaneously. The enemy had no response and could only conceal their weapons and try to run or drive from the area. The majority of these runners were stopped at the cordon.
D Company comprised the mobile element of 1st Bn The Royal Irish. They patrolled in Jackal vehicles and were known as Operations Company during this tour of duty (October 2010 to April 2011).
