Difficulties be damned
1st Battalion The Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment deployed to Helmand Province, Afghanistan on Operation HERRICK 12 (April to October 2010) and HERRICK 17 (October 2012 to April 2013).
The scene depicts a contact in Nad-e Ali, southern Helmand in summer 2010. While the Kingsmen in the irrigation ditch engage the enemy, a company commander delivers quick battle orders to his platoon commanders.
The newly issued multi-terrain pattern (MTP) camouflage uniforms were worn on operations for the first time.
‘Difficulties be damned’ is a loose translation of the Regiment’s Latin motto ‘Nec Aspera Terrent’.
The painting was commissioned by 1st Battalion The Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment.
