A Shura in Helmand Province, Afghanistan.
At a meeting called a Shura (the Arabic word for ‘consultation’), Muslims decide their affairs in consultation with those who will be affected by that decision. Here, British officers of 16 Air Assault Brigade, accompanied by an interpreter, attend a meeting with the local village elders. The ‘terp’ has hidden his face with his shemagh to avoid recognition by his countrymen. British soldiers and men of the Afghan National Police (ANP) and Afghan National Army (ANA) are in attendance. The vehicle (a Ford Ranger) bears the badge of the Afghan National Army. When seated on the carpets, the elders remove their sandals, and a soft drink or ‘chai’ would be served to the visitors.
