Foot patrol near Kajaki, Helmand Province.
Gaining and maintaining the confidence of the local population was the aim of the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF). This meant occupying and patrolling ground in order to hinder the activity of the insurgents. Here, a foot patrol passes a village. The sometimes outwardly friendly appearance of the locals could not be trusted.
At the front of the patrol is a black Labrador dog and its handler, from the Military Working Dog Support Unit, part of the Royal Army Veterinary Corps. In 2010 the unit was formed into the 1st Military Working Dog Regiment. The dog can quickly sense the presence of an explosive.
An Apache helicopter of the Army Air Corps provides overwatch.
