Cold War Warriors   Cold War Warriors

The British Army of the Rhine (BAOR) was part of the Allied occupation forces set up in West Germany following the Second World War. The Soviet Union had as many as 60 divisions based in East Germany, and the British role soon changed to prepare for armed conflict due to the threat of a Soviet invasion of western Europe. Upon the signing of the North Atlantic Treaty in 1949, and the formation of NATO, the BAOR was designated as Britain's first land force contribution to the alliance, and a period known as The Cold War lasted until 1989, when a wave of revolutions peacefully (with the exception of the Romanian Revolution) overthrew the communist regimes of central and eastern Europe.

Every unit of the BAOR was required to have 85% of personnel on station and ready at all times. Each year, following the harvest, the BAOR conducted a military exercise in West Germany. The largest was Exercise LIONHEART in September 1984, which involved 131,565 British personnel of the Regular, Reserve and Territorial Army, including 209 Battery which was equipped with the Blowpipe air defence system.

In this scene the air defence gunners are protecting a bridge crossing by Abbot 105mm self-propelled guns of the Royal Artillery.
