The Theatre Logistic Group
Operation HERRICK was the codename under which all British operations in the war in Afghanistan were conducted from 2002 to the end of combat operations in 2014, as part of the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF). The first deployments in support of Operation Herrick began in 2002 and gradually increased in scale to its peak in 2011-12. At its peak there were 137 bases across Helmand Province and Camp Bastion, which had grown to the size of Reading, with some 10,000 British troops, 9,800 ISO containers of military equipment, over 3,500 vehicles and a variety of consumables, including ammunition, food and other products, all needing to be moved, stored and distributed.
In December 2012 the Prime Minister announced that 3,800 troops, almost half of the force serving in Helmand Province, would be withdrawn during 2013. The UK ceased all combat operations in Afghanistan and withdrew the last of its combat troops on 27 October 2014.
The re-deployment of the British armed forces from Afghanistan was possibly the biggest logistics operation since the Second World War. 136 military bases were dismantled and everything was brought back to Bastion. The job then was to ensure that every item of materiel was redeployed to the UK, sold, scrapped or gifted to the government of Afghanistan. The Royal Logistic Corps (RLC) Theatre Logistic Group (TLG) was tasked with the return of the many and various assets in Camp Bastion. Major Lucy Anderson was the Officer Commanding.
The Joint Movements Unit (JMU), based on the airfield at Camp Bastion, managed freight and personnel. Boeing C-17 Globemaster III aircraft of the RAF were used to transport supplies into theatre. As the last pallet was taken out of each plane, the loading of equipment for its reverse logistics journey out of Camp Bastion immediately began. (By this period, Lockheed C-130 Hercules aircraft were being used for intra-theatre moves only).
This scene represents activity at Camp Bastion during Operation HERRICK 18 (April-Oct 2013).
