Operation TORAL, Kabul, Afghanistan
Since the drawdown of force elements in 2014, British troops were stationed in Kabul where they took the lead within the Kabul Security Force, a 7 nation organisation which provided vital force protection for UK and coalition advisors who were working with our Afghan partners to increase the capabilities of the Afghan National Defence and Security Forces. Operational TORAL drew to a close in 2021.
The Gurkha riflemen are standing on the walls of the Bala Hissar, the ancient fortress located in the south of the old city of Kabul, seen in the background. In the distance are the Sher Darwaza Heights at left; to the right are the Asmai Heights.
During the 2nd Afghan War the Asmai Heights were stormed by the 72nd Highlanders in December 1879. The 2nd and 4th Gurkhas took part in the campaign; the 5th Gurkhas were stationed at the Bala Hissar when the Amir's armoury exploded there on 16th October; in December they were involved in fighting at Karez Mir, the Chardeh Valley, Takht-i-Shah and the defence of the Sherpur cantonment.
