A Trojan Armoured Vehicle Royal Engineers (AVRE) in Afghanistan
Following desert trials in Jordan, the first of three Trojans was flown to Kandahar Air Field in January 2010. They were transported by civilian Heavy Equipment Transporters (HETs) to Camp Bastion, and Dorchester armour was added to the front and sides. They were employed in Operation MOSHTARAK in Helmand Province, which began in February 2010.
From September 2010, 5 Armoured Engineer Squadron provided close engineering support to the 2nd Battalion of 502nd Regiment, US Army and its partnered ANA Kandak in the Zharay district, Kandahar province where it took part in Operation HAMKARI.
The AVRE, laden with fascines above the rear deck, has a Full Width Mine Plough (improved).
The Trojan passes a ‘jingle truck’ while British infantry in the foreground have ‘gone firm’.
The Trojan AVREs were withdrawn from theatre during Operation HERRICK 17, (October 2012 - April 2013).
